How do you read a birth chart?
A birth chart is a symbolic map of the sky at the moment of birth. Interpretation is not about memorising isolated placements; it is about reading the system they create together.
Sun, Moon, and Ascendant: the three core layers
The Sun sign is associated with identity, will, and direction. The Moon sign describes emotional safety, habits, and instinctive reactions. The Ascendant shows how a person approaches life, meets the environment, and is first perceived.
When these placements share or support one another’s elements, inner needs and outward expression may feel more integrated. When they differ, the chart is not “wrong”; it simply contains a richer internal dialogue.
What do the personal planets describe?
Mercury relates to thinking and communication, Venus to affection, aesthetics, closeness, and values, and Mars to desire, action, anger, and boundaries. Their signs matter, but so do their aspects to each other and to the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant.
Element and modality balance
Fire relates to movement and inspiration, Earth to materialisation and security, Air to ideas and communication, and Water to feeling and intuition. Cardinal signs initiate, Fixed signs sustain, and Mutable signs adapt. A less represented element should not be labelled a defect; it can be read as a function that requires more conscious development.
Why aspects matter
A conjunction merges two planets intensely. Trines and sextiles suggest ease and support. Squares and oppositions reveal friction, awareness, and development needs. A hard aspect is not bad fate; it is often a powerful source of motivation and growth.
What if the birth time is unknown?
Without a birth time, the Sun and slower planets can often still be calculated, while the Moon may change signs on some dates. The Ascendant and houses cannot be determined reliably. It is more honest to omit them than to invent a time.
